VoIP
Voice of Internet Protocol, also known as VoIP, is a technology that converts the voice signal from your telephone into a digital signal that travels over the Internet. By switching your phone service to VoIP you can
jeopardize the integrity of your alarm system to transmit signals to the AFA Central Station. Most alarm equipment was not designed to work with VoIP. There are other ways to transmit your signals to our Central Station. Some of these ways can improve the reliability of your security system.
If you are thinking about switching your phone service or have already switched phone service, please call 1-877-AFA-1873. Other things to consider with VoIP:
- Unless a back-up power source is supplied for your VoIP equipment, your alarm equipment cannot transmit to our Central Station during a power outage.
- The Internet experiences more outages than regular phone lines.
- Alarm signals may be more susceptible to loss or distortion when sent over the Internet.
- Not all equipment (fax machines, modems, security panels, etc) will work in all cases.

DSL
Converting your phone line to a digital subscriber line (DSL) could affect the ability of your security system to transmit signals to the AFA Central Station. You should test your alarm system if you have switched your phone service. If the alarm system does not transmit to the Central
Station, a filter installed on the phone line could solve this problem. If you are thinking about switching your phone service, have already switched phone service or if you want information on the DSL filter, please call 1-877-AFA-1873.
